BOKAJAN, Aug 08: In yet another incident of elephant attacks, a herd of wild jumbo marauding at Bey village destroyed at least 10 houses inside Bormanthi under Eastern Range Division from where reports of man-animal conflicts often make headlines.
According to SGB Borsing Bey, the incident took place at around 11:00 pm when the residents of the village were sheltering inside their house while raining last night. He also added that no dead and injuries were reported from the attack, however, it has led to the destruction of roofs, household properties and houses belonging to Bapuren Tisso, Khorsing Bey, Sanjit Engti, Shivo Rongpi, Dinesh Chetri, Toro Chatter, Lalu Bagwar and Raju Tiyari. The wild elephant also destroyed the kitchen of Bormanthi ME School and the wall of the building collapsed as a consequence.
Following the incident, the Bokajan Forest office was immediately informed. However, the officials were helpless due to the lack of tools to drive away the elephants.
In connection to the attack, the locals informed TDE that the affected families were never compensated by the government when in the past several attacks were encountered by the village. In this regard, the government is also questioned by the villagers for failing to mitigate the conflict and assist the victims.
