Late arrival of Assam Police worsened the situation: villagers

DIPHU/HAMREN/JIRIKINDENG, May 11: In a shocking incident, several villagers of Langhemphi, a village bordering Meghalaya in West Karbi Anglong were attacked and brutally beaten up by Khasi miscreants from Khanduli on Thursday.
According to villagers, the incident took place when a huge number of Khasis of Khanduli armed with machete, sticks and other sharp weapons attacked Karbis and torched their farming huts in Langhemphi. Further, the Karbi villagers alleged that some Khasi police force in civil dress had accompanied them during the attack.
Narrating the incident, the Karbi villagers stated that they immediately informed local police about the incident but the police refused to go with them stating that they cannot go without permission from the district’s headquarter. “The incident turned more serious due to refusal of Assam police to come with us and during that time, a health worker Albertson Timung was nabbed and attacked by Khasis with sticks,” a local said.
Later, several villagers expressed their disappointed with the KAAC and Government of Assam over their failure to prevent today’s incident despite being reported and warned about the threats of serious consequences by the Khasis multiple times in the past.
“Today’s incident has exposed the shallowness of present Team Karbi Anglong as they have practically failed to protect its people and territory from the Khasi mobs despite being made aware of the serious threats our people have received this year,” irate youths said. Karbi villagers have demanded the KAAC for immediate action and issue official stand on the matter and warned that they would be forced to take measures to defend themselves if they don’t get any positive response from the district administration.
In this connection, the KSA Hamren Regional Committee has expressed their deep disappointment and severely condemned the incident terming it as criminal and attempt to disturb peace of the area and testing the patience of the good natured Karbi villagers.
Meanwhile, the injured health worker has been referred to a better hospital by doctors of Hamren Civil Hospital for treatment as his condition became more critical. Details of the incident are still awaited but the police reportedly reached the spot after two hours.
