BIRSINGKI, May 12: The Khasi-Kherwang community of Amser under Chinthong MAC constituency today celebrated the traditional festival of Thoh Lyngdoh, a ritualistic ceremony performed before sowing seeds for the new cultivation season. This annual festival is associated with the cultivation of various crops, on this occasion, offerings are made to the deities, and blessings for good weather, healthy crops and good harvest are sought.
It is interesting to note that Kherwang community branch of the Khasis can be found in West Karbi Anglong. They are an indigenous tribe of the land and their development and welfare is in the hands of the KAAC. However, the people of the community have expressed their displease over the continued negligence of the council towards them.
The United Khasi People’s Organisation Karbi Anglong had met the KAAC leaders and time and again appealed for assistance towards the celebration of Thoh Lyngdoh and for other developmental works as well. Even though KAAC had assured for help, no sign of fulfillment is seen yet.
As such, people from the community contribute money from among themselves to celebrate the ancestral festival. Nevertheless, they urged upon the Art & Culture department of KAAC for assistance in the future.
