Duarbagori Rong Asar Amei conducts training of village headmen

DOLAMARA, May 13:  Under the initiative of the Dolamara Rong Asar Amei a one-day training of village headmen under Duarbagori constituency was held today. The programme was chaired by the organisation president Gobin Teron, while the object of the event was briefed by the secretary Devinson Terang. Among the guests as well resource persons were advocates Sarthe Ronghi, Dhonison Lekthe, Salvation Timung and Jivan Bey.

“In order to protect our land we have to learn from the village headmen of Meghalaya, where to even take lang on lease, the general caste people have to give the name of local indigenous tribe,” said advocate Salvation Timung.

Advocate Jivan Bey said that if Karbi tribe wants to strengthen the customary form of administration, the Sarkari Gaon Buras (SGBs) must stop the randomly giving of NOCs to apply for Voter ID to the people coming from outside the district. Dhonison Lekthe stated that for a long period of 70 years (1954-2023 the Govt of Assam had kept the tribal people in darkness by not notifying the provisions of the Constitution of India, paragraph 4, sub-paragraph 4 which talks about your rights of the indigenous tribal communities to form customary adminstration system.

Meanwhile, senior advocate Sarthe Ronghi spoke on the menace of the normal judicial courts where victims have suffered due to the unkind nature of some lawyers. Many lives have been ruined due to very extreme punishments. He said that in a traditional village court, victims are not given so extreme punishments so as to give chance for rectification and transformatio.
