Awareness programme on road safety held

DIPHU, Aug 18: Under the initiative of the District Transport Office (DTO) and District Press Club of Karbi Anglong (DPCKA), an awareness programme on road safety was conducted today at Diphu Govt. Boys’ HS School. The programme was conducted keeping in view the increasing number of road mishaps in Karbi Anglong.
District Transport Officer Vikram Aditya Gogoi, DGBHSS principal Hillary Terang, DPCKA adviser Sonju Bora, DPCKA president Diganta Teron, general secretary Danielson Bey and officials of the DTO office and members of the DPCKA also attended the programme. DTO Vikram Aditya Gogoi himself conducted the session and interacted with the students.
The DTO spoke on the need of wearing a helmet while riding two-wheelers, wearing a seat belt while driving four-wheelers and several other safety measures to be followed both by riders/drivers and pedestrians. He appealed the people present to spread the message regarding the hazards of driving after driving.
The DTO emphasised the prevention of underage driving. He said that children below 18 years should not be allowed to drive a vehicle with gear. If anyone is caught breaking the rule, it will attract a fine of Rs. 25000, or three years imprisonment of the parent or both.
The DTO said that more than 40 people have lost their lives in road mishaps in Karbi Anglong this year and most of the people involved in the case are persons below the age of 40.
In order to make the session interesting, the DTO officials used a power-point presentation and displayed videos of real-life accidents and awareness memes.
