DIPHU, Aug 26: Under the initiative of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), an orientation workshop on Right To Information (RTI) was held at Arboretum Cum Craft Centre Conference Hall on Friday. The event was conducted in order to ensure a corruption-free work atmosphere in all the 30 departments under KAAC.

The resource person for the workshop was Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta IPS (Rtd). In his address to the gathering, he spoke on the history and the reason for which the Right To Information Act 2005 was enacted. He said that the Act has been playing a vital role in bringing transparency in govt. works.

“The public has been able to know about the schemes brought by the govt. However, some factions of people are misusing the Act. They have used the Act as a weapon to threaten government officials and disrupt works,” he said.

He said that showing the mistakes and shortcomings to the govt. is okay but it is unethical to threaten the govt. officials. “If anyone is found misusing the Act to threaten department officials, then strict legal actions will be taken. The concerned officer must file FIR against such persons,” he said.

Among the dignitaries present were State Information Commissioner Dr. Samudra Gupta Kashyap, former State Information Commissioner, Assam Information Officials, Karbi Anglong DC Madhumita Bhagowati, KAAC Principal Secy. Mukul Kumar Saikia and officers from all 30 departments.
