HAVARKEHAT, Aug 28: The United Student Union of Karbi Anglong (USUKA) demanded that the farmers who have been unable to cultivate crops due to insufficient rain must be provided compensation by the govt. They also appealed to the authorities to efficiently implement all the schemes under the Department of Agriculture and also to provide the option for Alternate Crops to those farmers who have been unable to cultivate paddy. With all these demands, the organisation today submitted a memorandum to the Karbi Anglong District Commissioner who is also the Chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA). The memo was received by ADC Devid Kumar Borah.

ADC Devid Kumar Borah assured to take all necessary steps to compensate the farmers who have become the victims of irregular rain. He further said that efforts will be made to include every farmer whose crops have failed or have not been able to cultivate.

The USUKA team also met District Agriculture Officer (DAO) Bidu Raijung and handed him a memorandum letter with similar demands. The DAO said that his department will work to help the farmers in going for the cultivation of alternate crops and make the farmers aware of not sticking only to paddy cultivation.

“Around 90% of the population of Karbi Anglong is dependent on agriculture. However, it has been seen that the Agriculture Department is not so serious about the need to provide basic facilities to the farmers of the district. All 16 wings of the department have failed to take care of the farmers, and his have resulted in the present situation,” said USUKA president Bibison Teron.

General Secretary Jintu Hazarika and several others were also present at the time the memorandum was submitted.
