BOKAJAN, Sep 06: The Khatkhati Police today seized a large quantity of dried Burmese areca nut being transported along NH39. According to the police, during their regular checking duty on the highway, at around 10 AM, they stopped a truck bearing registration number AS 26 AC 1080, which was moving from Manipur towards Guwahati.
On conducting a search on the truck, police found a secret chamber on the truck that contained the dried Burmese areca nuts. The chamber contained a total of 2700.11 kilograms of the dried nuts.
In this connection, two persons identified as Akbar Ali (26), son of Shamaz Ali and Amzad Ali (27), son of Monowar Hussain were taken into police custody. Both hailed from Barpeta district of Assam.
Police informed that the market value of the seized areca nut would be around eight lakh rupees. The seizure was made under the supervision of Khatkhati OC Romen Bordoloi and his subordinate staff of the PS.
