Seminar on uniformity of Karbi words held

DIPHU, Nov 25: A seminar on the uniformity in speaking and writing of Karbi words and the use of loan words was held today in Diphu. The event was conducted by the Lumbajong Regional Committee of the Karbi Lammet Amei (KLA), at Hiddhinath Rongpi Conference Hall, in the office of the KLA CEC.

The resource persons for the seminar included eminent writer and cultural activist Lunse Timung, independent researcher and linguist Sikari Tisso, English subject professor of Diphu Govt. College Maggie Katharpi, KLDB chairman and former professor of Chemistry Nobin Terang, lexicographer and writer Khoyasing Hanse, eminent writer Mondolsing Bey, writer and KLA vice president Karon Hansepi, vice president Kamsing Hanse and former KLA president Khorsing Teron. The seminar was chaired by KLA Lumbajong RC president Sarsing Engti.

In the seminar, several Karbi words which have been replaced by Assamese and English or Hindi words in day-to-day communication were highlighted and discussed. Speakers stressed on the dangers to mother tongue language from the excessive usage of borrowed words.

The speakers also strongly appealed to the Karbi speakers to develop the habit of using the Karbi words in situations where there is no need for the help of other language. They also urged the Karbi writers to follow uniformity in spellings so that the readers are not confused.
