DIPHU, Jul 16: The Indian National Congress (INC) party held a high-level meeting at the Kiranshree Grand Hotel today in Guwahati, Assam, to strategize for the upcoming 2026 Assam Assembly elections. The meeting was attended by prominent leaders, including AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, and was presided over by APCC President Gaurav Gogoi.

During the meeting, Raton Ingti, President of the Karbi Anglong District Congress Committee, raised several key issues affecting the Karbi Anglong region. These included the need for immediate implementation of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous State under Article 244(A), which would grant greater autonomy to the Karbis and people of Karbi Anglong. Ingti also highlighted the ongoing land acquisition issue in Karbi Anglong by Adani and Ambani companies, which has raised concerns among local communities, and urged the party leadership to take a strong stance on this issue.

Furthermore, Ingti alleged corruption against the Chief Executive Member of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), Tuliram Ronghang, and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, particularly in land acquisition and sales. He claimed that funds collected through corruption are being used to run BJP party activities in Karbi Anglong and Assam.

The meeting served as a platform for the INC party to discuss key issues affecting the state and its people, and the party is gearing up to address these concerns and provide a strong alternative to the current government in the 2026 Assembly elections. The issues raised by Raton Ingti are likely to be taken into consideration by the party leadership as they formulate their election strategy.

The visit by Kharge and Gandhi marks a pivotal moment for the Congress party in Assam, as it endeavors to re-establish its strong footing and revive its grassroots presence in the state. The party has scheduled a massive rally in Chaygaon, where Kharge and Gandhi will address thousands of party members and workers, laying out the party’s vision for Assam and targeting the BJP government’s alleged misgovernance.
