DONGMUKAK, Aug 21: Residents of the Binhum area have strongly opposed the resolution adopted by the Executive Committee of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) during its meeting held on July 16, 2025, at the Arboretum-cum-Craft Centre.
The decision, recorded under Resolution No. 2 and Resolution No. 20 of the 13th Executive Committee meeting, approved the allotment of a large tract of land to the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) for the establishment of a 1,500 MW Pump Storage Project within Langsomepi Development Block under Phuloni Revenue Circle.
Villagers from Binhum and Lochinlangso expressed their deep dismay over the move, declaring that they would never support the allotment of land for the project. They strongly objected to any move to issue of a No Objection Certificate (NOC) by the KAAC, calling it a threat to their land, forests, and community resources.
The Karbi Students’ and Youth Council (KSYC) extended its support to the protesting residents, with president Minarson Rongpi, general secretary Edison Tokbi, and several members of the organisation joining the public meeting to stand in solidarity with the local population.
Representatives from 12 affected villages under Binhum and Lochinlangso reaffirmed their opposition, vowing not to allow APDCL to take over their land for the project. They further cautioned that if their concerns remain unaddressed, they will be compelled to take their own course of action to safeguard their rights and resources.
