HAFLONG, Jan 11: The annual meeting cum get-together programme of Dimasa’s female clan or Jadi ‘Mairongma Jilik’ was held in Haflong today. The programme was organized by Kosholya Maireng Gedeba (Mairengdi) Welfare Commiittee.
Several delegates from several region of Assam including Cachar, Karimganj, Hailakandi, Karbi Anglong, Hojai etc. apart from several hundreds of the clan mates from all region attended the meeting.
During the meeting several issues faced by the members of society in their daily life were discussed and a discussion on how to develop the clan especially on youths, education etc., was held.
Senior member of the welfare Podmini Daulagupu informed that the meeting is held every year to address their problems and discuss how to get over it among clan mates and encourage the young generation toward positive vibes while seeking unity at the same.
Is may be mentioned that in Dimasa society, male have 40 clans groups ‘Sempong’ (Surname) while female have 42 clan groups ‘Jadi’ with each dottor no. or serial number. If one’s male clan is same to another be it male or female, it is considered they came from the one forefather (male ancestor) while if the female clan is same to another male or female, it considered they came from one foremother (female ancestor).
Marriage is forbidden between a man and a woman from the same clan‘Sempong’ and are considered to be siblings and same goes to female clan ‘Jadi’ if it is match they are considered as siblings.
