APHLC sounds alarm over the rise of outsiders occupying land in Rongnihang

Urges KAAC to monitor demographic change

DIPHU, Aug 16: In a latest development, the All Party Hills Leaders Conference (APHLC) has expressed grave concerns over the rapid demographic change in Rongnihang area in Diphu. The party has called upon the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) to take measures to check the occupation of a huge swath of land in one of the most recognizable Karbi areas.

APHLC spokesperson Angtong Engti Kathar along with party members after the visit of the areas spoke to media and expressed the party’s fear over the spread of homes the areas dominated by outsiders and suspected citizens. The regional party leaders stated that a huge number of anti-social elements were involved in drug peddling and other criminal activities.

Further, many of these lands are given out on lease attracting outsiders into Diphu and that local people are outnumbered and the lack of any monitoring policy and strict regulation is posing great threat to the people of Karbi Anglong.

The regional party also expressed immense dismay over the failure of individuals who are giving leases terming it dangerous precedents that would lead to permanent settlement of outsiders and buying off lands as soon as they get the opportunity.  The APHLC spokesperson said that there have to be some rules and regulations for areas under the Sixth Schedule.

Following this, the regional party called upon the KAAC to formulate policy and strict regulation over the lease of land to outsiders at the earliest in the greater interest of the indigenous people of the hills districts of Karbi Anglong.
