DILLAI, Sep 12: The Borjan branch of the Karbi Rong Asar Amei (KRAA) today convened a press meeting at Hidipi Community Hall at around 12 noon. It was attended by Borjan KRAA president Kehai Tokbi, vice president Harlongbi Engti, secretary Dorsing Hanse and several village headmen.
In the press meeting, KRAA expressed their strong opposition against the KAAC’s proposed move to establish VDC in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong. The KAAC had on 16th August released a notification after the 9th executive committee’s 13th meeting. In resolution No. 22 of the meeting, it was mentioned that the KAAC was keen to form VDC.
The Borjan KRAA leaders said that the formation of VDC would mean the implementation of Assam Panchayat Raj Act of 1986. They said that KAAC functions under the provisions of the Sixth Schedule, so the 1986 Assam Panchayat Raj Act. is not applicable here.
“Instead of the VDC, KAAC should put efforts for the formation of Traditional Village Development Council (TVDC),” said the body of village headmen.
They also informed that KRAA had submitted a drafting bill of TVDC to the KAAC, and the bill is now in the hands of the Governor of Assam.
