BIRSINGKI, Jan 03: Tension prevailed in Umpaklong village after Christian Gorkhas were threatened with dire consequences if not reconverted to Hinduism under the Baithalangso police station inside West Karbi Anglong district on Tuesday.
According to locals, the situation became tense after a group of Gorkhas from Umlaper and Hawang areas entered Umpaklong village and threatened the Christian Gorkhas of dire consequences if not converted to Hinduism. Umpaklong villagers Gidan Gurung and Pradip Gurung told TDE that the Gorkha group from the two villages threatened them to change their religion or vacate their village. “Further, they threatened us of physical harassment if we do not give in to their threat,” the victim added.
Following this incident, Christian villagers expressed fear and insecurity for their lives and families. The Christian villagers have called upon the concerned authority for immediate intervention to avoid any untoward situation that may arise from it.
