GOLAGHAT, Aug 23: Delegations from the Governments of Assam and Nagaland, led by Chandramohan Patowary, Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Assam, and Y. Patton, Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Home and Border Affairs, Nagaland, today visited the Rengma Reserve Forest. A high-level meeting was subsequently held at Bidyapur Field in Uriamghat to discuss plantation-related issues along the inter-state boundary.
From Assam, the delegation also included Biswajit Phukan, MLA Sarupathar, M.K. Yadav, Special Chief Secretary (Forest), and Sandeep Kumar, PCCF & HoFF. Senior district officials, including Pulak Mahanta, District Commissioner, Golaghat, and Rajen Singh, Sr. Superintendent of Police, Golaghat, were also present.
The Nagaland side was further represented by Achumbemo Kikon, MLA Bhandari, Y. Mhonbemo Humtsoe, MLA Wokha, and Gregory Thejawelie, Commissioner, Nagaland, along with senior police and forest officers including Senthil Kumar M, APCCF (Territorial), Jasbir Singh, IGP (Range), Ajit Kumar Verma, Deputy Commissioner, Wokha, Dr. Rokoshéto Katiry, Superintendent of Police, Wokha, Sara S Jamir, Deputy Commissioner, Niuland, and Relo T Aye, Superintendent of Police, Niuland.
The meeting deliberated on the importance of ecological restoration, conservation of forest resources, and fostering cooperation between the two states. Both sides underscored the need for joint efforts to ensure that plantation activities are undertaken smoothly in the sensitive Rengma Reserve Forest area.
It was agreed that the plantation initiative will be formally undertaken after discussions between the Chief Ministers of Assam and Nagaland. Both governments reiterated their commitment to work together for the protection of forests and sustainable development in the border region.
Today’s visit and meeting marked an important step towards strengthening inter-state cooperation and building mutual trust for the preservation of the Rengma Reserve Forest.
