Drain overflow at Taralangso entry gate raises health and civic concerns in Diphu

DIPHU, Jul 20: The persistent overflow of drain water near Ru Rangsina Sarpo Adonri, the main entrance to the Karbi Peoples’ Hall in Taralangso, has emerged as a serious concern for daily commuters and local residents.
Despite the area’s significance—being not only a central point of entry to the iconic cultural venue but also a symbol of Karbi identity and pride—authorities have reportedly failed to implement effective and permanent drainage solutions. The site, frequented by locals for walks and social gatherings, is also situated near a waiting shed, further highlighting the need for urgent intervention.
Civic bodies such as the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) and the Diphu Municipal Board (DMB) have recently intensified efforts toward town beautification. However, the stagnant and overflowing drain water at such a key public location undermines these initiatives and raises questions about the effectiveness of urban maintenance planning.
Residents have expressed concern over potential health risks, particularly amid rising fears of vector-borne diseases like dengue, which have seen spikes in various parts of Assam. Locals stress that the absence of a permanent outlet or drainage mechanism not only causes inconvenience but also poses a threat to public health and safety.
Public sentiment suggests that immediate attention and a long-term engineering solution are necessary to address the issue before it escalates further, especially considering the area’s prominence in both cultural and civic life.
