JCCPA team visits Muthade-B village, condemns Khasi intruders

Staff Reporter DIPHU, Apr 23: The Joint Coordination Committee for Protection of Autonomy (JCCPA) team today led by conveners Khorsing Teron, Saising Rongpi, Rabindra Rongpi and Sarsing Engleng and local KSA leaders visited Muthade-B, the Karbi village under the Zirikindeng inside West Karbi Anglong district to acquaint of the situation in the aftermath of Khasi intruders who threatened them and destroyed farming plantation on April 17. The JCCPA team told media person that that there had been disagreement over the village boundary of Muthade (B) and Mawjem and the matter has been settled in a peace meeting held on August 31, 2022 but the aggression has risen manifold ever since the ‘Give and Take’ policy adopted between the chief ministers of Assam and Meghalaya to resolve border disputes. On April 17, huge number of Khasis accompanied by Meghalaya Police and KSU leaders from Meghalaya descended at Muthde-B, cutting down white chandan, cinnamon, betel nut, bay leaf, lemon plants of the Karbis and threatened them with dire consequences if they do not abide by the terms of the Khasi villagers. “The presence of the Meghalaya police in the incident on April 17, 2023 at Muthade (B) in West Karbi Anglong is a matter of serious concern. It is a serious case of trespassing and interference into the internal matters of Karbi Anglong. It is condemnable and we strongly condemned it,” JCCPA convener said. The Muthade villagers told TDE that when they met Ziriking police OC to inquire if they have been prior information of people from Meghalaya, the police officer became silent and left when they asked him of their purpose. The villagers pointed out that the sinister motive and agenda of powerful group from Meghalaya to exploit any situation to extend the area of ‘disputed’ to their advantage. Following this, the JCCPA has called upon the district administration and the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council to take all steps to ensure security and peace of the area, to ensure that the territorial integrity is maintained and to deal with forces that are indulging in unlawful activities. The JCCPA leaders told media that the purpose of their visit was to acquaint of the prevailing situation and to show support towards the villagers who are living in their village despite being threatened by the Khasi aggressors.
