DIPHU, Aug 14: A man identified as Ajoy Nayar died under mysterious circumstances in the district jail under Diphu Police Station, triggering serious allegations from his family. They claim Nayar, an autorickshaw driver, was falsely implicated after police allegedly recovered narcotic substances from a bag left behind by three passengers who fled his vehicle.
Nayar’s wife told reporters that the family was never informed when he was taken to hospital on the previous night. They were only notified at around 9 am today that he had died. “If he was unwell, we had the right to know. Instead, we were kept in the dark,” she said. Police reportedly told the family they had tried calling his elder sister several times at night, but she insists she received no calls or missed call alerts.
The family is now demanding a thorough investigation to determine the cause of death and transparency in communication from authorities. “If he was not beaten in jail, then fine — but we deserve to know what really happened to him,” a family member said.
Further, the according to the wife, when she demanded the jail authority why no one had informed them about his health condition earlier, officials said je tried calling his elder sister’s phone several times during the night but received no answer. When she called her sister-in-law to ask if they had found no missed calls, she said that no messages — nothing. The family says the authorities later changed their statement, claiming they had called her only in the morning.
According to the family, the jail authorities later claimed they had contacted her in the morning and said Nayar was suffering from “gastric problems.” His wife questions the sequence of events, stating, “We don’t know if he died before reaching the hospital or was brought dead. We were not given any clarity.”
The wife said that they don’t know whether her husband died before reaching the hospital or was brought dead from hospital as they were not informed about anything.
Demanding a thorough investigation into the cause of death, the family says they want truth from the authorities. “If he was not beaten in jail, then fine — but we deserve to know what really happened to him,” a family member said.
