Padma Shree awardee Dr Ramkuiwangbe Newme accorded warm welcome

HAFLONG, Apr 08: Several organizations of Dima Hasao accorded a rousing welcome to Padma Shree awardee Dr. Ramkuiwangbe Newme of Dima Hasao at the statue of Ranima Gaidinliu in presence of a huge gathering today. 

Dr. Ramkuiwangbe Newme, born at Boro Henam, 28 km from Haflong one of the oldest Jeme villages of Dima Hasao district was awarded “Padma Shree” one of the most prestigious and highest Civilian award by the President of India on Wednesday in Delhi. He has received this award in the field of social work.

On his way to his residence at Lodi, he paid floral tributes to the statue of Ranima Gaidinliu at Boro Haflong where representatives of various organizations felicitated him with traditional scurfs.

Newme is one of the most active and dynamic leaders of the Heraka movement. He has dedicated his life to the upliftment of society. He has established 10 primary schools and encouraged education for women. A spectacular procession of more than hundreds of vehicles escorted him to his residence at Lodi.

Talking to the media Padmashree Newme said he was proud of the people of Dima Hasao and appreciated the Modi-led government for awarding the people from far-flung areas of NE India. He said, the youths should come forward for the cause of society. Their efforts will also be recognised someday.
