DIPHU, Nov 23: The Tai Ahom Bokajan Regional Committee today conducted a protest dharna in front of the office of Bokajan SDO Civil, in demand of Schedule Tribe (ST) status. The dharna was conducted at 11 AM in the morning.
Tai Ahom Bokajan Regional Committee president Randeep Baruah, secretary Dulu Lahon, Jitu Phukon and Robin Kr. Hatibaruah took the initiative of the dharna. In their response to the questions by media persons, Randeep Baruah said that the Assam Govt. had turned deaf to the demand for ST status by several communities of the state including Tai Ahom.
“We have been deprived of ST status by the govt. Due to this, the Tai Ahom community across the state and within Karbi Anglong – a district under the sixth schedule, is facing many difficulties. The community is deprived in regard to land rights, jobs and others,” said Baruah.
A memorandum addressed to Assam CM Dr. Himanta Biswas Sarma and KAAC Dr. Tuliram Ronghang was submitted to Bokajan SDO Civil in this connection.
