DIPHU, Oct 01: A one-day workshop on ‘Karbi Studies: Theory and Practice’ was held today at Jirsong Asong, Rongkhelan in Diphu. The event was organised by the Centre for Karbi Studies (CKS). The session began at 10:00 a.m. and was presided over by CKS core member Sabin Rongpipi while Dr. Vulli Dhanaraju and Dr. Dharamsing Teron attended as resource persons, along with CKS members and 40 distinguished attendees.
Dr. Dharamsing Teron, the director of CKS, spoke on the occasion of the Karbis’ worldview. He also discussed the community’s religious system, sacred numbers, and the concepts of time and space.
Later, he stated that CKS was the sole organisation that held academic writing workshops. He also raised awareness about the need of like-minded gatherings to protect the community’s root.
Dr. Vulli Dhanraju also discussed the ’emergence and theorising of Karbi studies’. He also spoke on socially constructed studies that can help people understand the Karbi community better, such as Black studies, Gender studies, Subaltern studies, Dalit studies, Tribal studies, and Karbi studies. According to him, the development of Karbi studies may be split into five phases: the colonial time, the Samsonsing Engti era, Karbi’s cultural insurgency, Karbi’s political struggle, and the academic or modern period.
The lecture session was followed by a farewell programme to Dr. Vulli Dhanaraju and certificate distribution. It was successfully concluded with a vote of thanks from Sabin Rongpipi.
