DIPHU, Nov 30: A district level training programme on ‘solid waste management and vermicomposting’ was held at Assam Agriculture University in Diphu here on Thursday.
The programme was organized to promote organic farming and its health benefits, initiated by the Assam Science Technology and Environment Council (ASTEC), supported by Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change, Govt of India in collaboration with Jakve Asong NGO.
Two resource persons who include principal of Serdihun English High School Rajesh Kro and assistant teacher of Longnit Hemphu English High School Jirsong Engleng presented on the methods of solid waste management and vermicompost respectively. According to one of the NGO members, there were 59 participants present today out of 35 schools invited.
The programme theme “Mission life in Assam” under the scheme environment education programme (EEP) was presided over by the secretary of Jakve Asong NGO, Nobin Timung.
This was followed by a speech from the chief scientist of Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS) Dr. KD Singha in which he expressed his appreciation for the thoughtful and important workshop organized by the organisation. He also elaborated on the importance of natural farming which is an eco-friendly method.
Later, resource person Rajesh Kro while presenting on management of solid waste focused on the impact of improper dumping that is hazardous for human health. He went on to elaborate the “Think globally, act locally” quote when talking about developed and clean country Singapore. Meanwhile, he also screened a video on “What happens at the landfill?” for a better understanding.
Furthermore, resource person Jirsong Engleng discussed the origin of vermicompost practice.
He also shared about his experiences and vermicomposting benefits during his presentation and also illustrated on preparation of constructing vermicompost structure and other requirements.
